David Edgerley Gates is a Santa Fe–based author celebrated for his Placido Geist noir Westerns, and his Cold‑War spy novels. A former Cold War intelligence officer, Gates is a four-time nominee for major mystery awards, and a frequent voice in Alfred Hitchcock and Ellery Queen mystery magazines. He writes two columns—The Decoder’s Notebook on Substack (published twice weekly) and a rotating column on SleuthSayers. Known for deep historical insight and articulate conversation, Gates is an engaging podcast and event guest and was most recently featured on KSFR Radio: The Last Word with Carly Newfeld on June 3, 2025
